Enlarged picture of Italian Alps with interesting white pattern

 

If the white is snow, which I suspect it is, why has it not melted in the pattern that looks like a trail that is in the open, while there is no snow in the hidden valleys among the trees? I would assume snow would last longer in the valley where the sun would not reach it as easily.
