The Stories We Tell

Categories: Q-and-A Club, Understanding Ourselves
By Arlene Harder, MA, MFT
This is the Q-and-A Club question for the week of March 4 to March 10. The introduction to the question compares the way in which the door to our house or apartment hides our physical space and the way in which we try to hide our emotional, inner space. Of course, when we leave home we can’t hide ourselves as well, because what we wear and what we say speaks volumes (sometimes giving only a small bit of information, and other times a great deal) about who we are and how we want others to see us.
THE STORIES WE TELL
If someone at a social event asks you who you are, what is your answer? If you tell someone about your life, what do you choose to tell, and what is it about you that you want to promote by responding that way?
Action Question: When you tell a story this week, are you willing to examine what effect you wanted that story to have on your listeners?
For those who are interested in my morning gratitude feature, here is what I am grateful for today.

I give thanks for my hairdresser because I would not do a very good job of cutting my own hair.
I give thanks for my gardner because I have neither time nor energy to cut the grass and plant flowers that brighten the front yard .
